IN ESSENCE

 

Natalia McIntosh is a designer-maker specialising in one of a kind pieces of jewellery that are completely handmade from beginning to end in the same way an artist might create a sculpture or a painting. Her jewellery evokes stylised glamour with a hint of attitude and a touch of playfulness.

INSPIRATION, DESIGN AND FABRICATION

​

The fascination with the human ability to convey meaning and emotion with just a few simple strokes of a pen led Nat to study graphic design and she approaches her jewellery making from that perspective. That’s not necessarily a deliberate choice but rather the most natural starting point from which to explore her ideas. Nat develops these through manipulation of 2D shapes forming a series of conceptual designs, where defined contours and clean, stylised lines are favoured, the essence of which is then applied to the 3D prototypes in metal or wax.

 

The two main characteristics that play a subtle, but important part in Nat’s work are playfulness and attitude, which add fun and edginess to her pieces. She works mainly with precious metals as well as semi precious and precious gemstones.

 

Favourite sources of inspiration are vintage and contemporary posters, fashion sketches and pattern books, to name just a few.

 

Nat strongly believes in respecting people and the planet, which is reflected in her work ethic. Harmful processes are eliminated and all materials are responsibly sourced from vetted suppliers. Nat reuses the outer packaging where she can. Almost all metals used in her jewellery come from recycled sources. Nat supports Shelter UK. A donation from each sale goes to this charity.

TRAINING AND CAREER

​

Natalia is a graduate of Central St Martins University of the Arts London, BA (Hons) Graphic Design. She later trained as a jeweller in Hatton Garden, London’s famous jewellery quarter, and St Albans School of Jewellery. Her first ever collection was purchased by Selfridges fashion department and sold across their UK stores. She currently works from her Hertfordshire based workshop.
